Our Stories

Our REDArena families and volunteers have been responsible for spreading the word about our program and services. We thank you for your support and kind words; you’re the reason we continue to make a difference.

"One week when the weather wasn’t cooperating, again, during our wet winter, William was able to have a “barn session”.  He groomed Sandy, learned about knots, discovered the funny animal name under a horses hoof and even met the barn kitty.  It was a delightful afternoon and one we will always cherish."  From William's Mom

"I have been volunteering for hippotherapy organizations for over 6 years. I started at Texas A&M and when I graduated, I really wanted to get involved with an organization in Austin. I grew up in Dripping Springs and was so excited to find RED Arena! Working with the kids, therapists and horses is so much fun. I can’t imagine not volunteering. Volunteering with RED Arena has encouraged me to pursue getting my Therapeutic Riding Instructor Certification, so, I too can instruct these amazing students!"  From Lindsey, Volunteer Horse Handler and Horse Conditioning Team Leader

"When we go grocery shopping, William looks for the greenest tops on the most beautiful carrots to make sure Dolly the horse will be able to smell the treats from far away.  This dear horse has become part of our lives and has given us days of delight. " From William's Mom

"When a friend told me that she and her daughter had been volunteering at RED Arena, I thought, "Huh. That sounds nice." It seemed like it might be something fun to do, and I'd be helping out kids, right? After volunteering for several months now as a side walker, "nice" is the last word I word use. Try AMAZING.
I have had the privilege of working directly with Jennifer, and also with Annie as they lead these kids around the arena and out on the trails, teaching and healing them as they go. What a wonderful opportunity for the children to get away from the sterile environment of medical offices, and onto the top of a gentle giant out in the sunshine and fresh air.
What has impressed me the most is the patience and kindness of these therapists. Don't get me wrong! They make the kids work hard, which is why each week I can see how they've grown and strengthened. They know each child personally - when to push, when to back off, and when to do an end-around. They are highly trained professionals who put their hearts and souls into their work.
I didn't expect to be so impressed by the therapists. I didn't expect to be so touched by the courage of these kids. I didn't expect to wake up each Wednesday morning, running to turn on the weather channel hoping for sunshine and no rain so I could be out at RED Arena in the afternoon. But here I am, impressed, touched, and well aware of the fact that the weather channel broadcasts the "Local on the 8's." Every single week when I leave, Jennifer never fails to say, "Thank you. Thank you for coming." All I can say is "thank you" to RED Arena for allowing me to be part of such a wonderful organization."  From  Caroline, Volunteer Side Walker
